John Wyndham might be one of my favourite science fiction writers. He was a British writer who focused on dystopian and catastrophic themes. Famous for his books: The day of the triffids, The Midwich Cuckoos and The Kraken Wakes.
What I like about his writing style is that bespite delving into these catastrophic themes of societal breakdowns and alien invasions, Wyndham has a greater emphasis on exploring philosophical questions of evolution than on shocking readers with violence. For example, one of my favourite books, called the Chrysalids. One prominent philosophical thread in the novel centers on the definition of normality and the human tendency to fear and reject the unfamiliar. In the dystopian world of Waknuk, where genetic mutations are considered deviations from the norm, Wyndham raises questions about the nature of conformity and the dangers of rigid societal standards.
